, paula broadwell. he spoke to cnn. that came as the c.i.a. announced an "exploratory" investigation of petraeus' conduct. his relationship with broadwell came to light during an fbi investigation that began last summer. today, attorney general eric holder defended the bureau's decision not to alert president obama and congressional leaders. >> we made the determination as we were going through the matter that there was not a threat to national security. had we made the determination that a threat to national security existed, we would of course have made that known to the president and also to the appropriate members on the hill. >> holman: that investigation also has led to a pentagon probe of the top u.s. commander in afghanistan-- marine general john allen. he's under scrutiny for extensive communications with a tampa, florida woman. allen has denied wrongdoing. defense secretary leon panetta said today no other senior military officials appear to be involved. he spoke during a trip to thailand. >> i'm not aware of any others that could be involved in this issue at the present ti

of the storm victims as well. cnn's victor blackwell is live for us in staten island. what are the expectations of what the president will do today? what's kind of his plan? >> reporter: well, it's two-fold, he's going to fulfill the role of comforter in chief and speak with the people who lost their livelihood. like this business behind me, this tech company, the businesses are completely devastated by this storm, but this is the scene in homes and businesses all over staten island. he'll talk with people who lost someone or know of neighbors who lost someone. of the 43 deaths here in new york, more than half of them are in staten island. also, he's here to view the recovery. you can probably hear in the background that the power tools are working right now. as soon as the sun came up, crews were back out, working. and that's what dominick traynham wants to hear more of. he moved to this area of newdorf on staten island when he was 13. it was 1959. four years later, he got married and bought a house up the road. now, both houses are destroyed by this storm, and i asked him what he did when he

, headline news they used to call it, the cnn network, general petraeus says the timing of the scandal had nothing to do with the deadly attack in benghazi. she spoke to him repeatedly, and he tells her that he always planned to testify and that he, quote, felt fortunate to have a wife who is farber than he deserves -- far be -- far better than he deserves. it just gets weirder every day. >> one small part of the story is unraveling a bit. you recall jill kelly, the socially yea son at the air force base, when she started receiving these allegedly harassing e-mails from petraeus' mistress went to a friend, an fbi agent. that friend is frederick humphreys. it is reported that he sent shirtless photos to kelley, but that story has been largely refuted or at least taped down. the photos were sent in jest, apparently and sent long before the petraeus scandal even surfaced. but the hundreds of e-mail exchanges between general john allen and kelley are the subject of a dod and inspector general investigation. they are e-mails that are mildly flirtation and an e-mail version of sexting. leon pane

and also david kirkpatrick of the new york times and cnn's fareed zakaria. what is the latest on the attacks and the failout? >> what we are seeing are more rockets coming into israel. there have been dozens of air strikes as well since the killing of ahmed al jabari, the leader of hamas' military wing, but he is also one of the founders of hamas. we are talking about a huge blow to hamas, and now the government there in gaza. israel is also telling us, and we are just hearing this from the military spokesperson that they are bringing in reservists, but they are consider iing a ground war, but they have not yet given the go ahead for that, but they are preparing. we know that they have been firing with the air with the air strikes, but we also know that they have been firing from the sea. their ships are anchored just off of the sea there in gaza firing into gaza and according to the residents in gaza that we spoke to said that at one point, it seemed to be raining bombs there in gaza. you can see some of the fires there. a big fallout. and real concern that there will be a fu

the circumstances surrounding his resignation. the retired general tells cnn his resignation had nothing to do with his scheduled testimony to congress about the 9/11 attack in benghazi. he also said he never shared classified information with paula broadwell, his former mistress. nbc news has obtained this picture of broadwell at an event in late october that petraeus also attended. according to sources this last meeting between the two apparently happened after bro broadwell admitted to the fbi that she and petraeus had an affair. we get our "1st look" at the fbi agent who actually started the investigation that led to the cia director's resignation. this is frederick w. humphreys ii, a personal friend of jill kelley. lawmakers have to wait another day before hearing general petraeus's testimony on benghazi. there were questions of whether the former cia director would take part in the house intelligence committee. instead he will appear behind closed doors with both intelligence committees tomorrow where leaders will zero in on all of the information they have been wanting to get from him.

know, it wasn't going to suit his purposes. he also went off the deep end today when a cnn reporter asked him why he happened to skip that meeting. and you know, just came off as kind of, again, unhinged and very bitter. >> joan and rula, thank you both for your time tonight. >> thank you. >> coming up, another day, another excuse from the former gop kingmaker. but wait until you hear what a gop chairman is saying about voter fraud. and the roots of gift comments, of makers and takers talk, started in 1981. tonight we will reveal lee atwater's full 1981 interview on how gop could appeal to racism without sounding racist. it's a "politics nation" exclusive. one is for a clean, wedomestic energy future that puts us in control. our abundant natural gas is already saving us money, producing cleaner electricity, putting us to work here in america and supporting wind and solar. though all energy development comes with some risk, we're committed to safely and responsibly producing natural gas. it's not a dream. america's natural gas... putting us in control of our energy future, now. time

more hours than cnn does. and we don't know about it because we're not allowed to anybody in the united states or show anybody in the united states what's going on. so here is a very, very valuable public diplomacy asset that is not being properly used. and it's not the fault of the people at the bbg. it's a lack of understanding at higher levels of government about how important it is. >> the british have a director general, they may wish of more of a sports team. >> i agree with jim. when i went on that board, it's neither fish nor foul, part of the problem but it has these constant leadership challenges. frankly, my sympathy goes out to the folks who work there and folks in the field because it's very, very difficult to do. and i know that walter isaacson has opposed the sort of significant re-org which i thought made a lot of sense. frankly, i'm not sure where it is these days. but made it more hopefully would make it a highly functioning organization. it is, we need every tool that we have in our arsenal. we need to be able to deploy them effectively. and i think better coordinatio

comedians. i love the op-eds you do for cnn.com. i wanted to talk to with you about all of the issues going on this week. i guess that everything that we're talking about all began when the c.i.a. surveillance operatives misunderstood david petraeus when he first said i want to tap that. did you ever imagine that we would see a soap soap ra like this? it is like the jersey shore for rich people. people copulating left and right and these weird tampa socialites. i don't know where to begin. what's your take on petraeus gate? >> i think you're right on the head. jersey shore is going off the air. this is the perfect replacement. great show. it's got drama. it's got women fight. that's what you need. you have to get them a room. this internet stuff is no good. let's see the fight. if you're the c.i.a. director and you can't keep an affair secret, you should be fired. >> john: thank you very much. if you're in d.c. and anyone in d.c. who can't keep an extramarital affair secret does not deserve to run a spy agency.

to study in the congress. >> deirdre walton, cnn, since the elections john boehner has been talking about what to negotiate a deal on the fiscal cliff and says he is open to new revenue and willingness to compromise. i was wondering what you think of his position on this, and if you are right to support him this afternoon? >> i do not know if you are here earlier when i spoke about the 10-1 deal. i want to see where they are willing to cut. olive heard is that the democrats are saying they are not willing to cut anything in. the president had a meeting last night with the labor unions, all of these separate liberal groups. and everyone of those groups to the president that he should not deliver anything on a reforms of our entitlement system, but you should insure the delivers a tax increase. i do not think they are open- minded in any way. i think we need to stop negotiating with ourselves. and we need to wait for the democrats to actually give us an offer that is a real serious offer. we need to stop speaking amongst ourselves. he won the presidency, let him lead. >> i believe that reve
